FAQs

Why should I choose to re-use?

Each year over 300 billion single-use coffee cups are manufactured globally. Due to their plastic content, 99% will not be recycled. As takeaway drink consumption grows, so does the problem of waste.

Each time you choose to re-use, even just once a week, you will be helping in the fight against single-use waste. Imagine the massive difference we could make if everyone did the same. Light, bright and beautiful to drink from, with no plastic or metal after taste, with Ecoffee cup, it’s easy to Choose to Re-use every single day.

If 2 million people chose to re-use just once a week, we would stop 104,000,000 single-use cups going to landfill each year.

What is Ecoffee Cup made from?

Ecoffee Cup is made from a composite of natural fibres (cornstalk and bamboo), non-GMO corn starch and a plant-based resin derived from aloe and soybean extract.  The natural corn stalk and bamboo fibre is upcycled from materials previously burned by farmers. These materials are plentiful and do not require any form of forest or food-compromise farming.

Ecoffee Cup is made with more than 97.5% natural materials and, unlike most other bamboo fibre products which consist of up to 60% melamine, we have been independently tested and verified by UK test house, Intertek to contain <3% melamine.

Our sleeves and lids are made from pure, latex-free food grade silicone, sourced from oxygen and silica (sand).

How does Ecoffee Cup test its products to ensure that they are safe?

Our products are regularly tested by independent institutions, such as Intertek and TÜV Rheinland to demonstrate our compliance with the EU’s strict LFGB Food Contact safety regulations. Namely (EC) No 1935/2004 and specifically (EC) No 10/2011.

Why have you changed the formulation in your most recent Ecoffee Cup?

We constantly look to improve Ecoffee Cup. Our latest version is microwave-safe and significantly stronger, which makes is more durable for longer everyday use.

Is Ecoffee Cup “environmentally friendly”?

Yes. Although we choose not to use this term in any of our communication because it is open to significant interpretation. Our mission is to provide beautiful, practical and affordable products that make a significant contribution towards the reduction of single-use items. Since we started in 2014, our customers have prevented more than 10 million single-use cups from entering the waste stream and subsequent landfill.

If that’s not “environmentally friendly”, we don’t know what is?

Is Ecoffee Cup biodegradable?

Recent changes to EU law mean that we are no longer able to claim our product is biodegradable. In order to meet these rules, a product must biodegrade 90% within 6 months. For all consumer durable products, this is simply not achievable.

How do I dispose of Ecoffee Cup when I am finished with it?

We are working on a solution for end-of-life cups in the US & Canada. We will update this site as soon as we have more information on this.

Where do you source your bamboo?

Our bamboo is sourced from Anji County in Zhejiang province, China, one of the world’s oldest, sustainably-managed forests. They have been commercially harvesting bamboo in this region for several hundred years. The bamboo industry in Anji sustains 10,000 farming families and represents a new face of manufacturing in China: clean and sustainable.

What species bamboo – and does it replace native forests?

Ecoffee Cup bamboo is Phyllostachys Pubescens, native to the region. It is the native forest, (some 600,000 ha.) owned and managed by regional and national governments.

Are chemicals used in processing of bamboo?

None. Unlike bamboo used for the creation of some textiles, bamboo used in our products undergoes no chemical treatment. Based on our first-hand inspection of the processing facility in Anji, we’re satisfied that the only additive to our bamboo post-harvest is some baking hot sunshine.

What are sleeve and lid made from?

Our sleeves, lids and stoppers are made from pure, food-grade silicone – which consists of synthesized silica (sand) and oxygen. They are food contact safe, phthalate and latex-free and suitable for temperatures up to +120C.

How do I prevent odours?

They most definitely shouldn’t. Silicone is chemically inert substance which means that, unlike petrochemical plastics, it should never emit odour. However, it can absorb some odours. Therefore, we always recommend washing lids and sleeves in the dishwasher (top shelf, removed from Cup) Also ensure that you avoid storing or washing with metal or conventional polypropylene plastic items such as storage containers or other plastic cups.

Quick Tips to remove odours

  • Top shelf dishwasher is always best; avoid washing or storing with conventional plastic or metal items
  • Mix a paste of baking soda and spread over the inside and around the rim of the lid; leave overnight and then wash clean.
  • Store near a small dish of vanilla, lemon or other pleasant-smelling material until the unpleasant odour has disappeared.

We are launching a natural cleaning product for Ecoffee Cup in early 2019. For more information please contact products@ecoffeecup.com

Why do you use individual packaging?

We keep our packaging to a minimum, however, it is vital to ensuring your Ecoffee Cup arrives unscathed. Without packaging comes breakages, and with breakages comes waste. We avoid single-use plastics, shrink wrapping, over-size boxes and unnecessary padding – and, wherever possible, re-use bubble-wrap and boxes to avoid them going to waste. We have also introduced fully recyclable paper protection wrap on all UK orders.
